Update on the efforts to locate the group reported missing after departing Zuwarah on 18 December 2025

116 persons still missing: Where are they? Families of a group of 116 people desperately seek answers after more than 2 months.

First report published on the AP website on 24 December 2025.

After more than two months, the 116 people remain missing.

The disappearance and the enormous distress it causes has lead to lots of unconfirmed information relating to the whereabouts of this group. First, it was reported that many people from Bangladesh survived and were rescued to Tunisia. It was also claimed that people were rescued and brought to Libya or even to Crete. Tragically, all such information has proven to be incorrect. The rumours and unconfirmed information are caused by the lack of official and verified information and the silence by Italian, Maltese, Tunisian and Libyan authorities.

Together with the families, we demand the end to the violation  of the right to know. We demand to respect the pain inflicted on the families by not knowing if their loved ones are still alive or have died.

Alarm Phone therefore amplifies the demands formulated by families of the disappeared:

“We (The families) acknowledge receipt of the claim that one individual may have survived the shipwreck. However, at this time, this claim appears to be unverified and unsupported by credible evidence. In light of this, we respectfully but urgently ask the following questions:
  1. Verification of the claim
  1. Who made the claim that a survivor exists, and on what evidence is this claim based?
  1. Has this information been officially verified by any recognized authority?
  1. If verification has occurred, why has it not been publicly documented?
Delay and Inaction
  1. Why has no clear update been provided despite the significant time that has passed since the incident?
  1. Why has no formal investigation been publicly announced or shared? What actions, if any, have been taken since the first reports emerged?
Search and Investigation Efforts
  1. Were search-and-rescue operations conducted, and if so, when and by whom?
  1. Were international or independent agencies involved in these efforts?
  1. If searches were stopped, on what grounds was that decision made?
Communication With Families
  1. Why have families received no official, written communication explaining the situation?
  1. Why are families being left to rely on rumors and unofficial statements?
  1. Who is designated as the official point of contact for providing accurate updates?
Steps Already Taken to Seek Answers

Families and concerned parties have repeatedly attempted to obtain information through official and unofficial channels.

Requests for clarification have been made, yet no verifiable response has been provided.
Public statements have been monitored, but none have offered concrete facts or documentation. Despite these efforts, no clear answers have been received.

Unacceptability of the Current Situation

  • The ongoing silence, lack of transparency, and absence of verified information are completely unacceptable.
  • This uncertainty prolongs suffering and prevents families from finding closure.
  • This matter involves 116 human lives, not speculation or rumors.
  • Every delay deepens the injustice faced by those awaiting the truth.

Actions We Demand From Authorities

We formally demand that authorities take the following steps without further delay:
  • Issue an official, verifiable statement confirming or denying the existence of any survivor.
  • Publicly disclose what investigations have been conducted and their findings.
  • Launch an independent and transparent investigation if one has not already begun.
  • Establish a clear communication channel to provide regular, factual updates.
  • Ensure accountability for any negligence, misinformation, or failure to act.
This is a matter of human dignity and responsibility.
The truth must not be hidden behind rumors, silence, or irresponsible claims.
Families deserve clarity.
Lives deserve respect.
And the truth deserves to be known.
We urge immediate action.”
Alarm Phone took all possible measures to get more information about what happened in the night between 18 to 19 December 2025. As there are no official actors or state authorities who help or support with the search, we are as well left to follow information through informal channels or trusted contacts.

We tried repeatedly – but without sucess to find a way to speak with the person who is said to be the sole survivor and who was allegedly brought to Tunisia.

From several people working in different institutions and from media research in Libya, we learnt that no bodies arrived to the shores of Zuwarah or the surrounding area after the disappearance. Also, no people were brought back to Libya alive according to these reports.

A search for the group in Libyan prisons and camps was conducted by a person in Zuwarah, without finding any traces of them.

For more than a month, 116 people have remained disappeared, and their families have been left to endure the unbearable pain of uncertainty, sustained only by rumors in the absence of verified information and official transparency. This silence is not neutral: it deepens suffering, prolongs injustice, and denies families their fundamental right to know what happened to their loved ones. These are not numbers but human lives, each one deserving dignity, accountability, and the truth.

We therefore urgently call on the responsible authorities to provide clear and verifiable information, to conduct and disclose thorough investigations, and to establish direct, honest communication with the families.

Until credible answers are given, we will continue to stand with the families in demanding clarity, responsibility, and justice, because they deserve the truth. The disappeared must not be forgotten!
